Netiquette, Usernames, and Passwords
Cardmarket is a social marketplace. Buyer and seller communication is core to the website, and because of this, most disputes on the platform occur because of poor communication. We've created this page to help users out. It lays out some principles for clear, polite communication on the website, along with some extra recommendations for usernames and passwords.
Guidelines for Communication on Cardmarket
Remember the Human
You are communicating with another person with their own life, personality, and desires. Respect their wishes and treat them the way they want to be treated. Use their name / username, do not insult them when you’re frustrated, and avoid the use of ALL CAPS. Cardmarket is also a multicultural website with people from many different backgrounds. Respect your fellow Cardmarket users’ culture and gender identity.
Think Before Hitting the Send Button
Assume your message is permanent – because it is. Always read through your message and ask yourself if you would like to receive a message like that. Make sure you are respecting internet privacy laws and act the way you would if you were sitting down and chatting with someone over coffee. We still live in a society – even on the internet.
Familiarize Yourself With Cardmarket’s Rules and Internet Privacy Laws
The European Union has strict guidelines on what you can ask people for online. They are easily searchable online and you are responsible for knowing them. Do not ask for someone’s personal information, like a phone number, their social plans, financial information, username or password, or anything else that you would not want shared yourself online. “I didn’t know I couldn’t do that” is not an excuse that works in court and it’s not an excuse that works on Cardmarket.
Respect Others’ Time and Bandwidth
We all have busy lives outside of Cardmarket and we all need to get back to them. Don’t dominate the discussion to try and get your way – instead let the other person speak and respond in a concise, relevant, and polite manner. This ensures that any issues you're communicating over are resolved quickly and with little-to-no conflict.
Be Forgiving of Others’ Mistakes
We all make mistakes and there are new Cardmarket users every day. Be gracious when someone makes a mistake and inform them, nicely, about our policies and rules. Most people aren’t trying to make mistakes or cause problems. A little patience will go a long way to resolving any issues in a simple and peaceful manner.
Usernames on Cardmarket
Users can choose any username they would like on Cardmarket within reason. Users cannot choose an offensive, derogatory, racist, or extremist username, or any username that could be interpreted as one of the above.
Cardmarket reserves the right to decide which account names are acceptable and which are not and we are not required to explain this decision to users. Most of the time, mechanisms we have in place will catch usernames that violate our guidelines, but sometimes an undesirable username is approved incorrectly.
Cardmarket reserves the right to change account names that do not comply with our guidelines. We will contact any affected users and ask them to submit suggestions for new usernames. In rare cases where we believe the account name was created maliciously, with the intent to violate our policies, the account will be suspended until the name is changed. In extreme cases, we will terminate the account.
Tips for Creating a Strong Password
The rules for Cardmarket passwords are easily available when creating a password, but we thought we’d add some guidelines here for how to create a strong password. You have money on your Cardmarket account and you definitely don’t want people getting access to it unless you want that! Here are a few rules that can help you create a strong password:
- At least 12 characters long but 14 or more is better.
- Use a combination of upper and lowercase letters, as well as numbers and symbols.
- Don’t use words that are searchable in a dictionary or the name of a person, character, product, or organization.
- Make sure new passwords are significantly different than old passwords.
Finally, the best way to secure your account on Cardmarket is to use Two-Factor Authentication. If you’ve been with us for a while, you know we talk about it a lot. There’s a reason for that – it is by far the best and safest way to secure your account from the outside world. We strongly recommend having it enabled for all important interactions on the website.
